Walther Hermann NernstForMemRS(German pronunciation:[ˈvaltɐˈnɛʁnst]ⓘ; 25 June 1864 – 18 November 1941) was a Germanphysical chemistknown for his work inthermodynamics,physical chemistry,electrochemistry, andsolid-state physics. His formulation of theNernst heat theoremhelped pave the way for thethird law of thermodynamics, for which he won the 1920Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He is also known for developing theNernst equationin 1887. He studied physics and mathematics at the universities ofZürich,Berlin,GrazandWürzburg, where he received hisdoctorate1887.In 1889, he finished hishabilitationatUniversity of Leipzig.
