Michael Bloomberg was born on February 14, 1942, and is an American businessman, writer, politician, and philanthropist. His net worth is $47.8 billion. As of October 2017, he was named the eighth richest person in the United States and the tenth richest person in the world. He joined the Giving Pledge - many billionaires promise to donate at least half of their wealth. Bloomberg is the founder and CEO of Bloomberg LP, a global financial services, mass media, and software company named after him. Bloomberg is famous for its terminals, creating a computer software system that provides financial data to the global financial services industry. During his college years, Bloomberg obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Hopkins University, and later obtained an MBA certificate from Harvard Business School. Carrying two graduation certificates, he entered the top investment company on Wall Street - SalomonBrother. In 1981, he established his own company and served as its chairman and CEO for the next 20 years. From 1996 to 2002, Bloomberg served as the chairman of the board of directors of his alma mater, Hopkins University. Bloomberg was the 108th mayor of New York City, serving three consecutive terms since his election in 2001. Before the election, he belonged to the Democratic Party, and in 2001 he switched to running as a Republican. He did not seek other positions, but chose to continue serving as the mayor of New York. On January 1, 2014, Bill Bishaw took over from Bloomberg and became the mayor of New York City. After serving as a full-time philanthropist for a period of time, Bloomberg returned to his position as CEO at Bloomberg until the end of 2014. On March 7, 2016, he announced that he would not run as a third-party candidate for the 2016 US presidential election, breaking speculation about his candidacy. Afterwards, he cast his vote for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
