He achieved this feat at the age of 29 and is the youngest British explorer to hike the North and South Poles. The Sunday Times listed Avery as one of the British idols, Sir Leonard Feynnes, and his wife Alan MacArthur. Tom Avery was born in December 1975 and grew up in Sussex, Brazil, and France. His interest in adventure began at the age of 8 when he first read about Captain Scott. He knew that his life was incomplete without following his hero to the South Pole. Tom began his mountaineering career by climbing rocks and ice peaks in Wales and Scotland at the age of 16. In university, he organized and led expeditions to the Andes, Alps, New Zealand, Tanzania, Patagonia, and Morocco. After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Geography and Geology from the University of Bristol in the UK in 1998, Avery worked as an Andersen accountant for 15 months. Between the city and the mountains, Tom ultimately chose the mountains. The pinnacle of Tom's mountaineering career to date was in 2000, when he led a pioneering British expedition to an unprecedented 20 mile mountain range near the western border of China. His team reached nine unnamed peaks exceeding 6000 meters. On December 28, 2002, after his 27th birthday, Tom Avery became the youngest British person to hike to the South Pole. His team also broke the speed record for hiking in Antarctica. With the help of advanced kites, they only walked the last 47 miles to reach the pole in 31 hours. Avery is a born leader, an outstanding young man who runs every expedition and organizes everything, including fundraising, training, and team logistics. His expedition team has received extensive coverage from international publications and television media, especially in the UK and the United States.
