From 2004 to 2009, Jay van der Wey served as the CEO of Royal Dutch Shell. Until 2013, he continued to serve as a non-executive director at Shell. Jay van der Waals is an important authority in energy, leadership, and management, and many of his suggestions have been tried and emulated by various industries. He has held many positions during his 42 year career at Shell and has held overseas management positions in key global markets. Currently, he has served as Vice Chairman and Senior Independent Director of Unilever, Vice Chairman of Dutch International Group, and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Philips. In 1992, Jay van der Waals became the Managing Director of Dutch Shell. He led the company to implement a series of major reform measures, including upgrading the Pernis refinery with $2 billion. In 1995, he was transferred to the United States to serve as the Chairman and CEO of Shell Chemical Company, and was appointed as the Group General Manager in 1997. He has been responsible for the chemical business and oversees Shell's global restructuring affairs. In 2004, he became the Chairman of the Executive Board of Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and Shell Transport Trading Company. After the merger of these two companies into Royal Dutch Shell, he was appointed as the CEO of the new company until his retirement in June 2009. Jay van der Waals led Shell through a series of major reforms, simplifying management and organization, and clarifying job responsibilities. From 2002 to 2004, he served as a member of the Supervisory Board of the Dutch Central Bank and the President of the World Chemical Industry Association. From 2006 to 2009, he was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. From 2009 to 2010, he served as the Vice Chairman of an expert advisory group on NATO's new strategic concept. In 2012, he was appointed as the Chairman of the World Economic Forum on New Energy Buildings, a member of the Executive Committee of the EIT Board of the European Institute of Technology, and the Chairman of the Rotterdam Climate Action Plan. In addition, Jay van der Wey is currently the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Delft Polytechnic University, a member of the Supervisory Board of Amsterdam Concert Hall, a member of the National Grand Theatre Committee, the Chairman of the Dutch Folk Village Supervisory Committee, and the Chairman of the Technology Platform, a government agency aimed at promoting science and technology education.
