Lorenzo Binis Maggie was born in Florence on November 29, 1956. He is a renowned Italian economist and currently serves as the Chairman of Societe Generale in France. He is a visiting scholar at the Wessenhead Center for International Studies at Harvard University and a senior researcher at the Rome Institute of International Affairs. From June 2005 to November 2011, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the European Central Bank. In the Executive Committee of the European Central Bank, he is responsible for international and European relations, as well as the legal and administrative departments of the European Central Bank. During this period, he was the representative of the G7 and G20 eurozone. Smaghi graduated from Brussels High School in 1974. Graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium in 1978 with a major in economics. In 1980, he obtained a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Southern California; Received a doctoral degree from the University of Chicago in 1988. Before joining the European Central Bank, he served as the Director General of International Financial Relations at the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. His earlier appointments included the Deputy Director of the Research Department of the European Central Bank, the Director of the Frankfurt Policy Department of the European Monetary Institute, and the Director of the Exchange Rate and International Trade Department of the Rome Research Department of the Italian Central Bank. He has published numerous articles on currency and international economics, and is also the Chief Commentator of the Financial Times. He resigned from the European Central Bank in November 2011.
