Peter Agre(/ˈɑːɡriː/; born January 30, 1949) is aNobel LaureateAmerican physician, molecular biologist,Bloomberg Distinguished Professorat theJohns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public HealthandJohns Hopkins School of Medicine, and director of the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute. In 2003, Agre andRoderick MacKinnonshared the 2003Nobel Prize in Chemistryfor "discoveries concerning channels in cell membranes."Agre was recognized for his discovery ofaquaporinwater channels.Aquaporins are water-channel proteins that movewater moleculesthrough thecell membrane. In 2009, Agre was elected president of theAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science(AAAS) and became active inscience diplomacy.
