Paul Berg(June 30, 1926 – February 15, 2023) was an Americanbiochemistand professor atStanford University. He was the recipient of theNobel Prize in Chemistryin 1980, along withWalter GilbertandFrederick Sanger. The award recognized their contributions to basic research involvingnucleic acids, especiallyrecombinant DNA. Berg received his undergraduate education atPenn State University, where he majored inbiochemistry. He received his PhD in biochemistry fromCase Western Reserve Universityin 1952. Berg worked as a professor atWashington University School of MedicineandStanford University School of Medicine, in addition to serving as the director of theBeckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine.
