Rolf M. Zinkernagel

Biography

Rolf Martin Zinkernagel AC (born 6 January 1944) is a professor of experimental immunology at the University of Zurich . Along with Peter C. Doherty , he shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Zinkernagel received his MD degree from the University of Basel in 1970 and his PhD from the Australian National University in 1975. [ 4 ] Zinkernagel is a member of the Cancer Research Institute Scientific Advisory Council, [ 5 ] the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , [ 6 ] The National Academy of Sciences , [ 7 ] the American Philosophical Society , [ 8 ] and The Academy of Cancer Immunology. About the Lasker Award

The Lasker Awards have been awarded annually since 1946 to living persons who have made major contributions to medical science or who have performed public service on behalf of medicine. They are administered by the Lasker Foundation, founded by advertising pioneer Albert Lasker and his wife Mary Woodard Lasker (a medical research activist). The awards are sometimes referred to as "America's Nobels."
